An All-inclusive Buying Guide to Choosing the Right Baby Formula
With all these products in mind, now it comes to deciding which baby formula is best for your baby. With so many to choose from, this may seem like an overwhelming task. Scroll down and you’ll discover my step-by-step buying guide, ensuring you’re making the best decision.
What’s the Main Ingredient I Need in My Baby Formula?
There are several things you should be looking out for in your chosen baby formula. Firstly, you’ll want to look for lactose. This is because lactose is naturally found in breast milk and is what helps your child to grow their bones and muscles, and improves their development in all aspects. However, lactose can be extremely expensive to manufacturers.
In some cases, this means that the manufacturer has switched the lactose ingredient to a lower-cost alternative, such as sucrose. Although sucrose may still provide some of the benefits that lactose does, it’s much sweeter in taste. This means your baby may find it addictive and won’t want to eat anything else.
This can cause problems at an age when the child won’t want to eat anything else and has been linked to problems later in life. These problems include an addictive personality towards sweet foods and have been linked as a cause of childhood obesity.
In some cases, it’s been found that some formulas were even as sweet as commercial grape juice. With this in mind, spend the extra money to get traditional lactose ingredients.
But My Baby is Lactose-Intolerant?
That doesn’t mean that your baby still can’t benefit from leading child formulas. As you can see from my list, there are soy-based formulas available for those babies that are lactose-intolerant.
This also means they are Kosher-Certified. If you’re in this situation, always check the label or product description to ensure that your baby can safely digest the formula.
Will These Formulas Help My Baby’s Gas and Digestion?
Indeed, that’s exactly what these formulas, especially the ones in my list, are designed to do. During production, some formulas go through a process known as partial hydrolysis. During this process, the proteins are slightly broken down into smaller forms. This allows your baby’s tummy to easily digest the proteins in their stomachs, resulting in a happy baby.
Additionally, you may want to consider the whey balance of your chosen formula. Let’s look at the facts. Breast milk contains roughly 60% whey and around 40% casein. Casein is an essential protein found in mammal breast milk, including humans. In contrast, cow’s milk has around 82% casein, which is why cows grow to be so large.
With this in mind, you’ll want to be looking for a formula that matches the human breast milk balance, all of which should be found on your product’s packaging.
Should My Chosen Formula Be GMO-Free?
If an ingredient is classed as organic (certified by the USDA) in means that the formula does not contain any GMO ingredients. But why is this important? Should it be something you consider?
Consider this; the majority of crops in the US have been genetically modified. They do this so the crops won't die when they are sprayed with powerful pesticides, while still killing the pests that would otherwise eat the crops.
One of the main pesticides used is known as glyphosate. It has recently been reported by the International Agency for Research on Cancer that glyphosate is linked to causing some forms of cancer, and is therefore labeled as a highly carcinogenic substance. With this in mind, you don’t want to be giving your children anything that could be causing them cancer.
Choosing what’s best for your baby may seem like a daunting task with a lot of pressure, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Follow my step-by-step guide, choose your favorite and see if it works for you. Just remember to always read the label before you try it, just to make sure it’s completely suitable for your little bundle of joy.
