Best Nasal Aspirators for Babies to Breathe Easy

As parents, it can be heartbreaking to see our little bundles of joy all bunged up and unable to breathe properly. All we want is for our baby to be happy and healthy.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible for babies to unblock their nose since they are unable to blow their noses as adults can, a problem that leaves a lot of parents feeling powerless.

However, there is one tried and tested solution that always works - a nasal aspirator. This is an ingenious invention which, in short, proactively sucks all the mucus out of your baby’s nose, enabling them to breathe easily once again.

To give you everything you need to get your little one breathing again, here is a list of some of my favorite nasal aspirators, specially designed with babies in mind.

Essential Things to Consider When It Comes to Choosing the Perfect Nasal Aspirator

With the knowledge of what’s available, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed about which aspirator is best for you. Don’t worry; scroll down to discover my comprehensive buying guide, detailing everything you need to know about child-friendly aspirators.

What Types of Nasal Aspirator Are There?

There are three main types of child-friendly aspirators. Firstly, you have the bulb aspirator. These are minimalistic devices that are the most affordable, but the most basic.

You simply press down on the bulb to push out all the air, insert the tip into your child’s nose and release your grip on the bulb. Then, the suction created will pull out all of the mucus.

However, despite these being regularly used in hospitals, they are very expensive over time as they are not meant to be used more than once and should be disposed of after every use.

Secondly, you have the manual aspirator. These devices usually consist of a pen-like device that will enter your child’s nose and then you simply suck on the end of the pipe to draw out the snot.

The first thoughts are usually ‘ew, I don’t want to eat boogies!’ Don’t worry, you won’t, it will all get caught in the container. As you are using your breath, you have complete control over how much suction the device has.

Finally, we have the electric aspirator. Obviously, these are more expensive to begin with, but are considered the safest, most hygienic and most effective.

However, although you have complete control over the level of suction, you may find the suction isn’t strong enough since the manufacturers have placed limits on them to stop them having too much power.

However, this does make them ideal for runny-nosed babies.

As you can see, there’s a wide variety to choose from. It completely depends on your personal preference as to which one you opt for and which one you’ll find easiest to use.

Is a Nasal Aspirator Hygienic?

Obviously, you’re going to want to keep your aspirator as hygienic as possible. You can do this in several ways.

A bulb aspirator is not hygienic at all. You can’t get inside the bulb, and there have been numerous reports where mold has grown as a result of continued use. This is why it’s only recommended to use them once.

The other two aspirator varieties are a little bit different. With this, you’ll want to look for an aspirator that can be taken apart and cleaned separately, enabling you to really get in there and clean out all the nasty snot.

What’s more, many aspirators these days can be taken apart and placed in your baby bottle sterilizer or in your dishwasher, enabling you to achieve an even higher level of hygiene.

Do I Want a One-Off Bulb or Long Term?

Consider how often children get ill. They’re probably going to have a cold more than once in their life, so it’s worth investing in a durable and high-quality aspirator, rather than a disposable one.

If a disposable one costs $5 and a long-term one costs $20. If your child gets ill with a cold four times, you’ve already saved money, a situation that is more than likely to happen.

Final Thoughts

Investing in an aspirator can be one of the most beneficial accessories you can purchase as a parent.

Not only will it help keep your baby breathing properly, but it will also save you from having to buy endless amounts of tissues and getting snot all over your baby and their clothes.

Take your time to invest in the right one for you and your baby, and you’re sure to have a stress-free experience.
