1. Mayo Clinic: Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy
This is one of the first pregnancy books that I bought and it helped me all the way through my pregnancy, from start to finish. In fact, I would go as far as to say that this is a must for any pregnant women’s bookshelf.
One of the best bits about this book is that it’s been written by the doctors of the Mayo Clinic, all the writers of which have their own children and have been through pregnancy themselves. This means that you can enjoy a book written by medical professionals with the first-hand experience.
The book is designed to be as easy to understand as possible in a well-organized and easy to navigate format. Inside the book, you’ll find three unique sections: pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn. As I said, all of the information you will need, from start to finish.
This book is incredibly long, and you’re not expected to read it all in one sitting. Instead, this book is ideal as a reference book that you can use to simply look something when you need to.
What's Great About It: What I loved the most about this book is the decision-making sections found throughout the book. These sections are designed to help you make the best decisions while you’re pregnant, such as whether or not to breastfeed, when to have another child, and so on.
2. The Pregnancy Countdown Book: Nine Months of Practical Tips & Useful Advice
If you’re looking for highly detailed advice and a ton of tips every single day for the 280 days of your pregnancy, there may not be any need to look further than this.
Within the Pregnancy Countdown Book, you’ll find every single one of the nine months broken down into detailed sections. Included, you’ll find all of the information that you need to know about the milestones of pregnancy, as well as information on the changes that your body will be going through.
What I personally loved about this book is that it’s so direct and straight to the point. There’s no fluff in the book and no details missed out. I mean NO details missed out. It’s not aggressive or offensive though, making it just right for expecting parents.
The book itself has been written by a combination of doctors and parents, giving you first-hand advice that you won’t find anywhere else.
What's Great About It: The best bit about this book is that it answers all the questions you may not want to ask your partner or doctor. I’m talking stretch marks, eating habits, flying safety, informing your family and friends, and everything else you can think of.
3. Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn
This book does exactly what the title says it does. It is one of those books that goes into immense detail about all kinds of subjects, some of which you won’t even find in most traditional pregnancy books. I’m talking about subjects like diet and exercise.
As you would expect, the book does lean towards a natural childbirth as the most beneficial method of giving birth. However, the book doesn’t push you in that direction and is very neutral; giving you all the information you need on both sides to make the best decision for you and your baby.
All in all, that makes this book a very refreshing read and with so much information, this book is the ideal companion for your entire pregnancy term.
What's Great About It: What makes this book particularly stand out for me is just how balanced it is, and that it can be used for all kinds of couples. There’s even information for same-sex couples, something that a lot of the traditional books don’t include.
4. The Expectant Father
Pregnancy is an amazing thing for both parents, and it’s just as important to get the father prepared and informed, as it is for the mother. That’s where this perfect book comes into play.
This is a must-read for any expecting father, and it explores, in depth, all of the ins and outs of the pregnancy and childbirth while giving your partner everything they need to know. There’s a ton of content of all areas of life, including the emotional and financial aspects of having a child. Your partner won’t know what they did without it.
There’s also a load of important topics covered, such as the effect pregnancy has on your sex life and even starting a college fund for your upcoming child. My husband isn’t much of a reader, but this book had him gripped from start to finish.
The book is extremely well-written and even contains an edge of humor while remaining completely factual and informative. The book starts at the beginning of pregnancy and can be followed throughout, all the way up to and after birth.
What's Great About It: My partner loved how easy this book was to read and navigate. To start with, he read the entire book cover to cover in a matter of weeks. However, he continued to use the book as a reference guide throughout the pregnancy, making sure that everything went smoothly.
5. 40 Weeks+: The Essential Pregnancy Organizer
Another essential book when it comes to your pregnancy bookshelf. One of the best ways to keep your pregnancy in check is by staying organized. And what better way is there to do that than with your own pregnancy organizer?
Within this planner, you’ll find a ton of extremely well-researched content that’s there to help you every step of the way. There’s no fluff in this book, just all the facts and information that you need to know.
Due to its size, there’s not as much information in it as a full pregnancy book, but there are introduction paragraphs to each section. The book is also full of checklists and lists of key points and things for you to remember, and is ideal for getting prepared and staying on top of things during your pregnancy.
There’s also a large collection of pictures and a load of space to continue using it after you’ve given birth. There’s room for you to record things like diaper changes, feeding times and room for notes throughout your pregnancy.
What's Great About It: Despite the reduced amount of information in this book, I do love the size. The book itself is small enough to fit into your purse, meaning you can take it anywhere and everywhere.

How to Choose the Right Pregnancy Book
A pregnancy book is one of those purchases that you might only make once or twice in your life, so it can be difficult to pick the right one from experience. However, to make sure that you make the right choice, here are a couple of things to remember.
Always check out the author of the pregnancy book that you’re buying. You want someone with expertise in the field, such as a doctor or a medical professional with experience in childbirth. This way, you can be sure that the facts are straight, and the opinions are neutral.
It may also be worth looking for an author who has had children themselves and can share the first-hand experience. Ideally, you’ll want a book written by both.
When choosing a pregnancy book, be sure to see which date it was published. You’re going to want a recently published book, perhaps in the last few years, to ensure that all the facts, figures and information is up to date. The closer the book was published to the present date, the better and more accurate the information will be.
A book can be written amazingly well, but if parents can’t use it, or id they find it unhelpful, it’s not worth your time. Always check the reviews of a pregnancy book before buying it.
Of course, a certain book isn’t going to work for everyone, but if the one that you’re looking at has shining 4-5-star reviews, the chances are that it’s one of the best.
Pregnancy doesn’t have to be a scary and daunting time. In fact, it can be fun and enjoyable. Get you and your partner clued up and informed about the journey, and you can be sure that your pregnancy will be a breeze.
