My Comprehensive Step-by-Step Guide to Choosing the Ideal Remote-Controlled Plane for Your Kids
Now that you know some of the best RC planes that are available, it’s time to choose which one is perfect for your child. Using my step-by-step guide below, you can learn everything there is to know about RC planes so you can make the most educated purchasing decision.
The first thing you’ll want to consider when choosing your perfect plane is the flight time. Due to the lightweight nature of remote-controlled planes, the battery life won’t be significantly affected, with the average charge lasting around 15 minutes.
As a rule of thumb, the more high-end you buy, the longer the flight time. However, any planes over $150 may too difficult for a child to control.
Due to the consideration above, you’ll want your plane’s battery to be quick to charge so your child can get back outside to play again as quick as possible. In most cases, this will be an hour or so, but you may be able to find a quicker charger, but this will be more expensive.
In some cases, you may be able to find a plane with a replaceable battery, enabling you to purchase multiple batteries to prolong your flight time when you’re out and about.
The weight of your plane will have a significant effect on some important features of the RC plane. It will affect the flight speed, the height your plane can reach, as well as the amount of damage your plane will receive in the event of a crash.
As you can see from the planes on my list, most are made from lightweight foam that will maximize all of these factors as well as minimizing the amount damage your plane will receive if it hits anything.
Ease of Use
As your child will be the primary user of your plane, it needs to be as simple to use as possible. As you can see from my list, the majority of these devices have multiple settings that can be selected depending on the experience of your child.
On a beginner setting, the plane will be incredibly simple to control, but it will limit the amount of freedom your child will have when flying the plane.
As your child becomes more confident in flying, you can increase the settings which will give them more control over their flying style, enabling them to maximize their speeds and the maneuverability of the plane.
Some planes will require some assembly when you first receive them. You may also want to dismantle the plane and store it in the packaging while it’s not in use to protect it. If this is the case, you’ll want a plane that can be quickly assembled.
Regarding the planes on my list, you’ll usually just have to attach the propeller and the wings, and you’re good to go. As a rule of thumb, the more expensive the plane, the more assembly will be required since there are more features.
Range is another important aspect to consider. You wouldn’t invest in a plane that will only fly in front of your child’s face. You want a plane that can go up to a distance that will allow your child to pick up speed and perform a variety of maneuvers.
Always refer to the product description or packaging for the range of your desired plane. The minimum distance you’ll want is around 200 feet.
This solely depends on what brand of plane you decide to buy. As you can see from my list, some planes come with an integrated panic button which is ideal for children, especially when they are initially learning to fly the plane.
You may find some planes come with other features such as integrated cameras and stabilization equipment that makes flying easier. These are optional extras, and are not necessary for your child to have a great experience.
As you can see, thanks to modern technology, remote-controlled planes have come a long way in recent years, and you can now purchase a plane that’s packed full of features that your child will love. Taking your time to invest in the right plane for your child can make a world of difference and will open your child’s mind to a whole new world of enjoyment in an activity and passion that could last a lifetime.
